Lugo was drafted by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2019 MLB Amateur Draft out of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy in Florida, Puerto Rico. In his first season in the system, he played for the rookie ball team and the former Low-A Lowell Spinners, he combined to play in 41 games, and he hit .257 with a .664 OPS; he had five doubles, a triple, one home run, 13 RBI, 19 runs scored, three stolen bases, and 15 walks. In the Winter of that season, he played for Atenienses de Manati of the Puerto Rican Winter League playing in five games going 0-3. The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. In 2021 he played in Single-A Salem playing in 105 games, hitting .270 with a .701 OPS; he had 21 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 50 RBI, 61 runs scored, 15 stolen bases, and 38 walks. In 2022 he played for High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland, he played in 117 games hitting .282 with a .830 OPS; he had 26 doubles, ten triples, 18 home runs, 79 RBI, 77 runs scored, 20 stolen bases, and 35 walks. That Winter he was back in the Puerto Rican Winter League this time playing for Criollos de Caguas and in 39 games he hit .275 with an .810 OPS; he had three doubles, six home runs, 19 RBI, 20 runs scored, 11 walks, and two stolen bases. Last season he struggled with his first real exposure to Double-A hitting .242 with a .677 OPS in 83 games; he had 23 doubles, one triple, five home runs, 37 RBI, 37 runs scored, eight stolen bases, and 19 walks. This season he is two home runs away from tying his total from last season and he has 24 total bases through nine games to start 2024.
